Succulent Care Guide

Most succulents need bright light, free-draining compost and careful watering.

Succulents come from many different climates, so treat these notes as general guidance and check the needs of the particular species.

Light

Provide bright light and introduce plants to stronger direct sun gradually. A sudden move from shade to hot sun can scorch leaves. If growth becomes stretched or pale, the plant may need more light.

Compost and pots

Use a loose, free-draining mix suitable for succulents and a pot with drainage holes. Avoid leaving the pot standing in water. Choose a pot only a little larger than the root system.

Watering

Water thoroughly, then allow the compost to dry to a level appropriate for the species before watering again. Plants generally need less water during cool or low-light periods. Do not follow a fixed schedule without checking the compost and growing conditions.

Temperature and seasons

Temperature tolerance varies considerably. Protect tender species from cold, frost and cold wet compost. Some succulents grow mainly in warm weather while others grow in cooler seasons, so adjust watering to the plant's active growth period.

Propagation

Some succulents can be propagated from offsets, leaves or stem cuttings, while others are best grown from seed. For cuttings, use a clean tool and allow the cut surface to callus when appropriate for that species before placing it in a suitable medium. Keep newly propagated plants in bright indirect light until established.

Common warning signs

  • Soft, dark or collapsing tissue can indicate rot or cold damage.
  • Wrinkled leaves may indicate thirst, but root damage can also prevent water uptake.
  • Long, weak growth often indicates insufficient light.
  • White cottony deposits or scale-like bumps may be pests; inspect leaf joints and roots.
